What are the odds I'll make back more than I paid for it?
--------------------
Let's forget about the "gift basket". Let's just stick to the lottery tickets inside. If there is $100 worth of lottery tickets, then you should expect to "win" approximately $50 ON AVERAGE! That's it! That's what the lottery companies pay out. Only about 50% of what they collect from ticket sales. CAN you possibly get more? Well of course you can. WILL you get more than $100? Almost certainly not. If you did this 100 times in a row - actually paid $100 on 100 separate occasions - you would likely find LESS than $100 around 99 times and MORE than $100 perhaps once IF YOU'RE LUCKY! No matter what, you will have spend a total of $10,000 (that's $100 times 100), and you will have "won" around $5,000 for all your trouble. That would include the 1 time that you made MORE than $100 on the group of tickets! So what will happen to you? You're only going to do this once probably. My guess will be that you will "win" somewhere between $40 and $60. If you get even 5 or 10 MORE dollars than that, you should consider yourself extremely lucky. If you get less than $40, consider yourself unlucky. If I could make a wager on this, I would bet $10,000 that you will NOT make back the $100 that you will spend. I'd bet $100 that you'll "win" somewhere from $35 to $65 - no more, no less.
