Why do the Academy Awards give the "Stars" $25,000 to $50,000 gift baskets? ?
there are thousands of starving children in the US and the Academy gives the "rich" more expensive trinkets? Would a donation to an American Charity not make more sense?
--------------------
It's not the Academy Awards per se, but high-end retailers actually "donate" things to go into the gift baskets, so the Academy isn't actually paying anything for them, thus they have no money to donate. The reason companies give free gift baskets to celebrities is because they make a ton of money off of them. For example, if Chanel gives all of the celebrities in attendance a pair of sunglasses... and the celebrities are spotted wearing these sunglasses... then Chanel believes that us lowly peons will run out to the nearest Chanel store and buy the same exact pair that we saw Angelina Jolie or whoever wearing. Hotels give away tickets for free vacation stays in the gift bags, so when people see that Brad Pitt or whoever stayed at their hotel, then now it's the "cool" place to stay and they get free publicity for letting him stay there free of charge. It's a great marketing ploy, actually. We live in a capitalist society, so retailers have no obligation to donate any of their money to charity (The SHOULD donate money and it would be the right thing to do, but there's no law saying they have to). Most companies only care about their wallets, and unfortunately, getting celebrity endorsements brings in more money than simply writing a check to a charity. Don't blame the Academy Awards though, it's the companies who donate their products to celebrities... they're the ones who should be donating to charity instead of giving their products to famous people.

Started a gift basket business but they are not selling, what are we doing wrong?
In March, my family started a gift basket business. We operate out of home and have website. We attended a major trade show as a vendor and only sold three or four baskets. We sent literature to real estate agents, funeral homes, and the list of potential customers from the trade show. We have also gotten creative and put together cute inexpensive favors for the ladies at the Race for the Cure marathon. We have donated a few baskets for some charity events. We still havnet seen profit. We have also just joined a craft store for the holidays through the end of December in hopes to get ourselves out there. We have only sold 18 dollars so far and its been almost a month. Other vendors at the store sell like crazy and they are selling crafts as well. Is it just that people are not likely to buy a gift basket unless its for a special occassion? Our baskets are priced way under competitors. I know we havent put out any expensive ads, could that be it? Hopefully someone can help.

Target your market and think about doing specialty baskets made for exclusively for the recipient. That means taking orders and not buying items in bulk but you should see a bigger return than what you're seeing now. Good Luck!

Searching for gift baskets and want quality. Does anyone know about Swiss Colony or 1-800--baskets?
For x-mas I want to make gift baskets?
What should I put in them? I don't want to spend a lot of money like I did last year on one specific gift for each member of my family. Where do I buy cheap baskets. Should I just buy cheap nice stuff from the dollar store and put it in each basket
--------------------
The dollor store acutally has some cute little baskets cheap. They have stuff you can make a bath basket or a kitchen basket. A baby basket, pet stuff. Last yr I even found some cute slippers and sweats for toddles. You can make some nice baskets from the dollor store.

Celebrities and gift baskets?
Did you know that every presenter at the Oscars received a gift basket worth $70,000. They don't need that. They should be happy just to be there. What do you think about celebrities recieving these gift baskets? Are they taxed on them?
--------------------
its ridiculous. yeah lets give millionaires a bunch of stuff they don't need...and if they did need it, they have enough money to pay for it themselves. I hate that celebs get everything for free when they are the ones that have the money to buy stuff. Meanwhile there are homeless people with nothing. And military that make crap for salary but they are fighting for their country. They should make the millions. Send them the $70,000 gift baskets.

What goes in a homemade gift basket?
I'm rather a motherly figure to my friends when they are sick and I like to make gift baskets of all sorts. I have tea, tissues and an okayu recipe (rice and chicken broth) and am wondering what else would be a good idea to put into a basket. I'm trying not to put meds or anything in it and trying to make it natural as possible for the items I place within, thanks!
--------------------
A fresh lemon and a small bottle of honey (from $ store) to add to the tea? A packet or two of spiced apple cider. If you sew at all, a square piece of cheery flannel to wrap around the neck and keep it warm (you would only have to zigzag around the outside edge. A pretty mug for the tea and apple cider. It's not really a med (I don't think) but those tubes that have the smell of Vick's Vapor Rub--you hold them just at the nostril opening and inhale. I'm not sure if they do anything but they always make me feel like I'm doing something to get better. lol It must be nice to be your friend!

Celebrities and gift baskets?
Who thinks celebrities get way to much for free? Like those gift baskets they recieve for just showing up at an event. They are usually worth over $10,000. A law just passed that they need to be taxed on those gift baskets. Do you agree with that? I don't think they should get them at all. They have enough money to buy their own. Maybe baskets like that should be auctioned off for charities? What do you think?
--------------------
ya i agree with you.... All they do is make those people more greedy.. sometimes there not gift baskets. they go to a hall and there are tables set there with stuff. from clothes, acesorries, perfume, watches, gadgets ect. and they pick what they want and then they mail it to them... i think they need to give this stuff to people who are poor. no wait, maybe stop doing these things and put the money where it needs to go!!!!

The Best Food Gifts (not gift baskets)?
For years I've purchased Christie Cookies and Koeze's Nuts (they're outstanding) as gifts for my clients. What are other specific recommendations for companies that sell great-tasting holiday gifts. I guess I'm looking for answers that are not the first to jump to your mind (such as Harry & David). Thanks in advance! Sally

Gift baskets for out of towners?
I wanted to put together a gift basket for out of towners staying at a hotel. What would be good items..Most of them will not be staying in the columbus area after the wedding. The reception will be over by four pm so they're going to stay the night before after the rehearsal dinner and we'll have to be up EARLY. I was thinking mugs with cocoa or coffee (but not everyone drinks coffee)
--------------------
When we stayed overnight last summer for my good friend's wedding, they sent gift baskets to everyone's hotel room....which I thought was a terrific idea! In them, they included bottled water for both, peanuts, granola bars, trail mix and gum (which we used the morning after....the mint gum helped ease our tummies for all the drinking we did the night before at the reception). For your baskets, the hot cocoa packets and coffee packets sound great....everyone likes either one or the other. If they are getting up early, you might want to include something you might take on-the-go for breakfast....breakfast bars or granola bars. Great idea Ches!!

Christmas Gift Baskets?
I am wanting to give gift baskets to my family members. I bought Christmas globes, different Christmas candies, candles, and little Christmas memo pads. Is that a good idea for the baskets or should I get some other things for them?
--------------------
That sounds great. The only other thing I would add is something made by you. Such as homemade cookies, painted ornament, card, etc. It will just get it a special touch.

Can you buy multiple name brand items, package them in a gift basket per se, and resell them?
For instance, if I buy different types of name brand shoes, mix and match them (or not) and stick pairs of them in gift baskets then sell them would there be legal ramifications?
--------------------
There are SEVERAL businesses that do NOTHING but what you describe. As long as you legally obtain the products, and do not misrepresent what you are selling, there is no reason why it should not be legal.

Do people really like gift baskets?
How can someone know if there getting the right gift basket for the person?

Make it yourself. If you are giving a fruit basket....You should know a little about the person you are giving it to. I have a few Vegetarian friends so on B-Days, I give them a vegetable and fruit basket with what ever is seasonal at the time. Like right now I made a few baskets with DRY vegetable soup packets, sweet taters, squash, oranges, dried fruits, a few nuts, apples...etc... Just be creative. YOU can buy BULK items and make several baskets compared to buying just 1 basket. The cost is way beyond what it would take to MAKE it yourself. and I love personal gifts even if it is a knitted scarf. But I am sentimental. If the person likes meat...then make a dry meat basket with dry salami, jerky, crackers, cheese etc... If they like bath oils...go to a Walmart or Dollar store and get a few gift baskets and then go home and take them apart. A make a few baskets with bathoils and fruits.. SEE my dear the IDEAS just keep coming. HAVE FUN PEACE SO many Ideas. TRUST me IF a man PERSONALLY made me a basket...It would be awesome to get. P.S. I have made baskets and put them in a metal bucket. You do not have to put things in a WICKER basket. Be creative. Basket doesn't mean BASKET. Use nice box, gift bag...etc...

Making a birthday gift basket and sending it from NYC to LA?
My friend's birthday is in May and I live in NYC. he lives in Cali. LA. He enjoys coffee very much but gift baskets online are soo so so expensive. I thought maybe I'd make one myself and send it to him. Do you think that would be even more expensive? would it arrive there in one piece or would it break?

Use scotch tape to hold things in place - and plenty of "packing" - gift baskets or gift boxes are mailed all the time - add other related items - like a bean grinder, measuring scoop or mug - something that he'll use and that will remain to remind him of you after the coffee is gone.

just add more candy to his to make them balance out. He won't mind and I don't think the girl will even notice. By the way, it's awful nice of you to do this for your boyfriends siblings.
