there are thousands of starving children in the US and the Academy gives the "rich" more expensive trinkets? Would a donation to an American Charity not make more sense?
--------------------
It's not the Academy Awards per se, but high-end retailers actually "donate" things to go into the gift baskets, so the Academy isn't actually paying anything for them, thus they have no money to donate. The reason companies give free gift baskets to celebrities is because they make a ton of money off of them. For example, if Chanel gives all of the celebrities in attendance a pair of sunglasses... and the celebrities are spotted wearing these sunglasses... then Chanel believes that us lowly peons will run out to the nearest Chanel store and buy the same exact pair that we saw Angelina Jolie or whoever wearing. Hotels give away tickets for free vacation stays in the gift bags, so when people see that Brad Pitt or whoever stayed at their hotel, then now it's the "cool" place to stay and they get free publicity for letting him stay there free of charge. It's a great marketing ploy, actually. We live in a capitalist society, so retailers have no obligation to donate any of their money to charity (The SHOULD donate money and it would be the right thing to do, but there's no law saying they have to). Most companies only care about their wallets, and unfortunately, getting celebrity endorsements brings in more money than simply writing a check to a charity. Don't blame the Academy Awards though, it's the companies who donate their products to celebrities... they're the ones who should be donating to charity instead of giving their products to famous people.
