What do you think of this poem?

I really need help with it, thanks. Sales Pitch To My Memory A white washed house, towering tall In a busy parking lot; a monument of protest against the Parkview plaza. A neighborhood that looped 'round back, and a private road, often traveled. Ivory covered houses behind pink petal storms, like faces behind veils against a backdrop of woods. A little girl, a red tricycle, and a blue dress, threadbare, yet loved. A little boy, and his group of friends, 10 speed bikes and mean faces- a challenge and a chase, to a lost little girl, and a highway that led her to other places, to other homes and other townships and cities. To schools, boarding schools and finally other states. To downtown excursions, late night rituals, and first drunken tirades. Tales of sabotage at the hands of friends, and plotted escapes. To the trailer in a trailer park, the first home and a small spending spree. A fake diamond ring and plans for a wedding. To a broken union and baby's first kick, the birth, and a proud mother, a bewildered mother, behind a smile, hand me downs, and unplanned plans. A trip back home, and another shot at family life, a second first home in a basement. Hung pictures, simmering stew, and seasoned sachets. A white wooden crib and a screaming tot, a screaming pot, screaming parents, and slamming doors. Slamming doors against mothers who drop their kids like gift baskets upon your lap, a diaper bag and its contents spilling across the floor; cased secrets spinning upon a shelf, and a shaking room against screaming, screaming , and falling knick knacks. And then tickets upon a night stand, a quickly scrawled letter, and a ragged suitcase, threadbare, yet loved. and a plan, a half hearted plan to get away. But not until years later, when ripples settle, and waters have since stilled, with a child half grown and plans of her own, on some random event. A requested stop along the way, and a brief pause beneath a sycamore tree. A view like an old Polaroid, scanned and doctored in a photo shop- a living window. A small paved lot, a small gray house, and a suspicious string of tiny shops. The same size they have always been.

I am a british born, american raised man of pakistani decent. I just came back here in UK (place of birth) and

dont understand why older asian men, and some younger and women wearing asian clothes. In America (specifically Florida where I live) most asians wear western clothes I hardly see a black man wearing a african clothes. Why are asians so intent on wearing this all the time? Once in a while is okay but whats wrong with English clothes.Especially men who wear shalwar. they look very very lazy and look unemployed. Second question- Why are asians' friends predomanantly asian? In america, probably 70% of my friends are white 20% are black and latino and the other 10% are mainly asian. I feel like a white man in America, ive lived there for 20 years and not a sinngle racist comment. Quite the contrary in the neighborhood I moved into I had people coming to my door with gift baskets and people inviting me to dinner Here within six months i heard the word paki and all the time I see anti-immigration rhetoric. I dont completely blame white people but non-integration of asians
--------------------
I live in Wigan, which has very few non-white residents, and work in Bolton, which has a high number of Asians, and Blackburn, which also has a large Asian community. Blackburn is essentially 2 towns. A white enclave and an Asian enclave with virtually no interaction between the two. Bolton is not quite so bad. A good friend there (white) is married to an Indian muslim, and the street is mixed, and lots of people get into mixed relaitonships. The word "paki" is one of my pet hates. There is a lot of ignorance in Britain. Worryingly too many people look upon skin colour as a mark of being an immigrant, which of course is not true. They also seem to think ALL people who have come into the country have done so illegally, which is also not true.

If I want to raise money for my nephew's medical bills, do I need to form a non profit organization?

My 16 month old nephew was recently diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis and their insurance is refusing to cover $15,000 worth of RSV vaccinations that he needs to have. I want to host a trivia night (rent a hall, or hopefully have one donated) with gift baskets to bid on, a 50/50 raffle, and a cash prize for the winner of the trivia contest (split half and half between my nephew and the winners). The proceeds would go to help pay his medical bills. However, I'm not sure I can do this without legal issues and tax problems. Does anyone know? Thank you so much!
--------------------
Hey! I saw this post and I am so sorry for your unfortunate circumstances. I wanted to make sure, however, that you didn't get yourself into trouble. Nonprofit or for profit or politician - in many states YOU CANNOT JUST HOLD A RAFFLE!!! Please forgive the rudeness of capital letters. But I have seen individual demolished by the IRS and 501c3's fined tens of thousands of dollars over not following their state's raffle laws to the letter. Not that the state is generally forthcoming with this information! This is one of the biggest mistakes that nonprofits and other companies/individuals make. Pleeeease check out your laws in your state! Many states consider ALL raffles - even 50/50 raffles out of backyard shed, to be gambling. Yes gambling. Some have declared it illegal lotteries. Some have it only legal for 501c3's, some have it legal for everyone. Raffles are usually governed by a particular department of the state government that, while varying from state to state, is almost always overseen by the state attorney general, and almost always requires that you file for (and pay for) a raffle license. Often there is a waiting list for this license. And you have to spell out in explicit detail what the proceeds will go to - and you often have to put specific terminology on the tickets with the contact numbers for the attorney general's office. Any little mess up could get you in real trouble. But it varies greatly from state to state. So research research research!! Make sure you know the following: 1. Is your state a state that requires you to be a 501c3? 2. Is it legal at all? 3. Do you need a raffle license? 4. Is your state a state that requires you to FIRST pay for the raffle prize, show proof of date of purchase, before you actually hold the raffle? 5. What is the EXACT wording that the attorney general requires on the tickets? How much notification time must the receiver of the tickets have between the ticket "drop date" (the day they get them in hand via mail or otherwise) and the day of the raffle? 6. What is the EXACT procedure for claiming the proceeds? 7. Where is the EXACT location that the raffle drawing needs to be held? For instance, in many states, the county you actually get the license in is the exact county you must draw the ticket from. You need to physically be there. 8. Do you need a witness/notary at the drawing? Make sure, after you have done all this, that you choose an actual professional printer to print the tickets - one who has done the tickets for other organizations and know exactly what to write. Take no chances in raffles. Messing up on a raffle is just like under the table sports betting, and it is drastically frowned upon by the IRS. Take care - and be careful! Sorry for my paranoia!

Is this good customer service after a company fails to send my order?

I ordered 6 gift baskets that were on sale from one of (if not) the largest fruit basket/gift tower companies in the world. Two baskets were delivered last week and the other employees were told theirs should arrive soon. After not receiving them today, I called the company and was informed that they no longer have any more of the deluxe baskets or anything close to the size. "But" I was told, they could substitute their "deluxe gift tower of treats" instead. The baskets i ordered were 18lbs of fruits, nuts etc and were originally priced at $340.00. The substitute has only 1/3 the fruit (pears and apples) and is just candy and popcorn that sells for $149! And we would have to still pay the same $100 for the substitute! Furthermore, they never even called/emailed etc to inform us to tell us of the mistake! We have been ordered with them for three years spending about $800 a year. Is this good customer service? I feel they should offer the equivalent discount on the substituted item OR should send the tower of treats along with a nice gift basket to fill in for the difference since other office employees will see the huge size discrepancy.
--------------------
That's terrible service. They should have gave you a huge discount. And ask you if you would accept the partial order. Do what you feel would be best for your employees. I knwo some will wish they had what the others had though. its always like that. Try your best.

Where can I sell blankets like this, that I make?

And how much could I sell them for? This one cost me about $13 to make. PICS: http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Leigh615ann/100_1773.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Leigh615ann/100_1774.jpg Blanket in a gift basket: http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b147/Leigh615ann/100_1775.jpg
--------------------
That's adorable! The market seems pretty saturated with baby stuff, so how about doing a "doggy" theme and placing the gift baskets with vets and in animal shelters? I think you could charge right in the $30 neighborhood for the blankie and maybe a chew toy or squeaky toy.

--------------------
Good customer service doesn't even exist anymore, but in this case I'd call it fraud because they sold you an item they didn't have in stock and are attempting to give you less. It isn't like fruit is that expensive in the first place, sounds to me like they are way overpriced. Just because a company is well known and large doesn't mean they are honest, have the best product, or are the best priced. In fact, it usually means the opposite, how do you think they became so large? They did it by charging ridiculous amounts for less and cutting corners through quality and customer service, that's how, but they have little concern from the consumer because they have already soaked so much money out of them that they can pay millions of dollars in lawyers fees to uphold their name. They know what they did, they did it to hundreds or maybe even thousands of people who relied on them over the holiday season. I should know I used to work for one of the largest manufacturers of car air conditioners, and they were always producing crap and sending bad quality to their consumers intentionally in order to cut costs and they were the #2 manufacturer in the world and were affiliated with the #1 manufacturer. Next time you buy, buy directly from a small competitor, your much more likely to receive a fair and honest deal and good costumer service to boot, not only that you will be supporting the economy if you do so. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Words to live by. I would call them and tell them this will be the last year you will be ordering from them. Sorry but all of these dishonest buisness practices really yank my chain, but what makes me even more angry is how the justice system has been set up to support such crap. The next time you see someones car go up in flames due to faulty wiring you'll know it was caused by either the #1 or #2 car air conditioner manufacturer in the world. Oh, and by the way they aren't going to offer you anything, that would defeat their purpose. ;-)

CHRISTMAS COOKIES RECIPE'S !! help?

I need some E-A-S-Y COOKIES pretty~nice~yummy cookie and treats recipe's to fill gift baskets with for gifts. I have fudge, so not that, but package cookie mixes ideas?? I am terrible making from scratch! Thanks MERRY CHRISTMAS! [ps- I hope to see lots of EASY recipes here!!!!]
--------------------
I am doing the same thing -- one recipe that I have made for several years and plan to make this year are Cake Mix cookies. So easy, so versatile and everybody loves them. A recipe I recently found that I plan to make are Cake balls. Like the cookies, the possibilities seem endless. Cake Mix Cookies 1 box cake mix, any flavor ? cup vegetable oil 2 eggs Mix all ingredients well. Add any type of chips or nuts that you prefer. Drop by spoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet. Bake 8 - 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Some good combinations: Chocolate cake mix with chocolate chips and chopped nuts Chocolate cake mix with white chocolate chips and nuts Chocolate cake mix with peanut butter chips and chopped peanuts Vanilla cake mix with chocolate chips and chopped nuts Vanilla cake mix with white chocolate chips and chopped macadamia nuts Spice cake mix with finely chopped apples Strawberry cake mix with white chocolate chips (this was an experiment that turned out to be everybody's favorite) Use your imagination -- the possibilities are endless ... and they turn out like designer cookies, which they basically are. Cake Balls "This recipe is very versatile and heavily addictive. You can mix and match cake and icing flavors as well as the chocolate coatings. If you want to go the extra mile, cake balls can be rolled in nuts, sprinkles, coconut, etc. or double dipped in white and dark chocolates. Chocolate confectioners' coating is also called Almond Bark in some stores." 1 (18.25 ounce) package chocolate cake mix 1 (16 ounce) container prepared chocolate frosting 1 (3 ounce) bar chocolate flavored confectioners coating 1. Prepare the cake mix according to package directions using any of the recommended pan sizes. When cake is done, crumble while warm into a large bowl, and stir in the frosting until well blended. 2. Melt chocolate coating in a glass bowl in the microwave, or in a metal bowl over a pan of simmering water, stirring occasionally until smooth. 3. Use a melon baller or small scoop to form balls of the chocolate cake mixture. Dip the balls in chocolate using a toothpick or fork to hold them. Place on waxed paper to set.

I want to make a date night gift basket for my parents for christmas. I'm going to put a restaraunt giftcard in the basket, but I don't know what else to put in it. They don't really like going to the movies. And I don't have that much money to spend. Any ideas?

You could put chocolates and flowers in the basket. For your dad to give your mom at the end of the date :P

Appropriate Diwali gift?

I have friends who are Hindu and would like to give them a gift at Diwali. They have been good friends to us and have given us gifts to recognize our holidays (Christmas, etc). Now I would like to return their thoughtfulness. In reading about Diwali, I thought about a basket with candles and dried fruit, and other Indian 'goodies' that I can buy at a local Indian store. Would this be appropriate?

Ya candles and dry fruits are good enough...

Could this sell at all?

My niece has so many clothes that she only wears an outfit once. There all designer clothes and it seems a waste to throw them out. Where can I sell them online other than ebay and amazon and can I even sell them. Another thing I was thinking of was making them into gift baskets with the outfit, matching accessories and a plush toy. Would it sell and if so how much should I charge?
--------------------
I sold my sons newborn/baby clothes on craigslist.com its free to post and I usually sell it pretty cheap like 20-30 bucks for a whole lot of like 30+outfits. If you make baskets maybe you can sell it for more but the clothes are still used so you have to take that into consideration. I really cant give you a price just try one and if they dont sell lower your price thats what I do.

What can I add to this gift ?!?

I'm giving my mom a basket full of stuff from The Body Shop. I'll be adding massagers, oils, creams, a gift card and candles. She doesn't want clothes, jewelry or perfumes of any kind! I need more ideas though! Please keep in mind I'm not artistic. I don't wanna add anything personalized because I did that last year. I'm not artistic AT ALL! Preferably something bought! I have a budget of $125. It might seem like a lot but it's for my mom and she's done a lot for me so she deserves it. I'm 14 by the way!
--------------------
honestly, you shouldnt be worried about how good of an artist you are. but if you want something personalized you should honestly check this out.. theyll do it for you.. go to www.printcanadastore.com and you can get ANYTHING personalized, like shot glasses and even personalized candles and cute light up christmas boxes like the stuff is honestly SO COOL i bought so many gifts from that place for christmas i love it. if not, you should honestly make her something, you might think that your not artistic, but itll be something that your mother will love! if not, get her a gift certificate to get a manicure and pedicure, or even a massage or something from a spa :) mothers love that kind of stuff even if they arent girly.

What would be a great birthday gift for my gf?

Her birthday is in the beginning of Feb. and I'm thinking of getting something really special for her, however I can't seem to come up with anything. At that point we will have already been dating 3.5 months and I really want to show her how much I care. Already I have gotten her flowers on three seperate occassions, twice just because and once because it was Christmas, bought her a really nice jacket for Christmas and suprised her at work two days before since we couldn't get together on Christmas Eve or Day because of the distance between us and visiting families on those days, bought her a huge basket of chocolatte from Godiva, met her family on New Year's, and even came with a gift for her on NYE wrapped and everything (it was a highly scented candle which I got at Bloomingdales). Is it too early to go with some jewelry as a sign of my affection and committment to her??? She already knows I really love her, but sometimes I have little doubts here and there that she may not love me and yet at the same time she cares an absolute ton for me so she says. I believe and trust her, but I just want to make her happy like I did during this past holiday season.
--------------------
Dude, take her somewhere. GO on an overnight train ride to niagra falls ( or somewhere equally cool) Women love to go on overnight train rides in the sleeper cars. Bring plenty of champaign.

Click here! Quick "holiday gift" question!?

What's a good (tasteful / fast / easy / affordable) Christmas / Hanukkah present to get for the staff of my dentist's office? All the stores are full of candy and cookies and chocolate baskets, and I can't get them that... lol. Also, unfortunately I don't have time to bake or make anything myself. Thanks people! :D
--------------------
Flavored hand creams and chap sticks from Avon.com. Ships fast, very affordable. They have minis that are very festive for the holidays. A tray of meats and cheese, or veggies, from your local grocery store. With dip in the middle. A gift cert for a food place near the office...so you can get them lunch.

What's a great gift to give a girl for high school graduation if you really don't know her?

My daughter is almost done with first grade and has had her first invite to the high school graduation. She was a jr. cheerleader this year and one of the girls that helped coach her is someone she greatly admires. This girl was also on our girls basket-ball team. For being so many years older, she always acknowledges my daughters when she sees them in public and always talks to them. So my first grader wants to be just like her. One day after gymnastics the HS gal said she had something for my daughter....it was an invite to her graduation and the open house after-wards! She was so excited! So now I need to figure out a good gift for her. She has been such a positive influence in my daughter's life and is a great role model both in academics and athletics! Any advice?
--------------------
I ordered by niece's friends and 2G usb drive from pexagontech.com. I had it customized with their name and their favorite color. I also decked it out with Paisleys. My niece said it was an awesome gift and her friend's will love it. You can get these in guy colors and with guy looking tattoo art. I like the silver with diamond plate art for guys. I think you can get them in multi packs too if you don't want to customize.

Dream grandmother that has passed away 4 yrs ago gave us 3 Easter baskets in the middle of October!!!?

My cousin called me and told me that she had a dream that our grandmother came to her and gave her 3 Easter baskets and told her to keep one, give one to her mother, and send mine to me ( I live in another state). She told her that they were gifts and to make sure she sends mine to me now because it'll take a few months to get to me. When she asked her why she was giving us the baskets now she said she wanted to make sure we get them on time. Can anyone tell me what that means?
--------------------
Lots of people believe that our loved ones who have died often can still come to us in our dreams. I have had these type of dreams. Your grandmother is just letting you know that she is still keeping an eye on the three of you and still care about all of you. Dreams connect us with our inner being that is more closely linked to the spiritual level. We can connect more readily in our dreams with all who are close to us including some who have died. If you don't believe that one can connect with the dead to some degree in our dreams or that your cousin has that capability, then it would have to mean that your cousin misses her grandmother and envisions that that is how your grandmother would tend to act if she was here.

Would you like this gift for your baby shower or your baby?

i got my SIL who isn't having a baby shower due to circumstances, (her having a baby by a man not her hubby) a laundry basket with the soft bottom lining, & put 5 onesies, 3 baby blankets, 2 bibs, 6 sippy cups, a 6 pack of spoons, 5 spill proof snack containers, 2 sleepers, 6 different containers of gerber baby food, a box of gerber rice cereal, 2 story books, 12 mini rubber ducks for the bath, a pair of squeakier mittens, 2 gerber apple juices, a cotton 3 in 1 set (it has 100 q-tips, 40 cotton balls, 40 cotton pads) would you like this, i was trying to think of things she'd need later on, not now, she is 45 and has a 12 yr old son so she's reusing everything from him, so she doesn't need any clothes or anything, we bought her a bouncer chair already, so would you like to receive this as a gift? thanks in advance for your answers. sil means sister in law for those who don't know
--------------------
That's a lot of stuff. Personally I would appreciate anything that anyone took the time to get for me and baby. Now I also have to include that I think she should still have a shower. That kind of circumstance should make no difference. A baby shower is a celebration of life and no matter how the baby was conceived it should still be loved and celebrated, right?

What is a GOOD GIFT idea for a 15 year old birthday?

My friends birthday party is today. Here's some info: She's turning 15, a freshman, im the same age(meaning i should be able to relate to her), im her [one of her best] friend, she loves movies, makeup, hair stuff, body stuff(like lotions, etc), and pretty much anything a girl likes. So, I had an idea where I give her a basket full of Movie items. But... I only thought of two things: A bag of popcorn(kernals, but to-be popped in a microwave) and a Harkins Theatre gift card(10$). I know she really wanted a new bag, but i dont have time to get it. Any more ideas???
--------------------
I think she would love a small basket with lotions, body washes, bath salts, etc. That's what I would want:)

Valentine's day plan and gift,, please advise?

Ok so I've been thinking about this for a couple weeks now, there is a girl I really like(she's not my girlfriend at the moment, hoping soon).. for Valentine's Day everybody always goes to fancy restaurants and that kind of stuff but that is not romantic to me, my plan is, take her to a beach where the only lighting will be by moon and candles with soft music in the background and a basket with her favourite food, drinks and deserts, I give her a rose before we go and on site a card with a self made poem and a box of her fav. chocolates (she doesn't know about all this, its a surprise), I just don't know what gift to get her, something not too serious or expensive(she doesn't want to rush it)...what do you think of my plans and what gift would be appropriate?..thank you
--------------------
your plan should be gift enough. since you guys aren't really serious yet, everything you are doing is a great idea, but a gift isn't really necessary. However your plan is AWESOME! :) I'd love to be your girlfriend after that and she should too. Keep up the good work.

What should I get my realtor as a closing gift?

I know realtors usually get a gift for their client at closing. I'm not sure if it is customary for the client to buy something as well, but I would like to even if it's not common practice. What would you recommend? And what price point is appropriate? I was thinking of a nice basket with girly goods like candles, cookies, and lotions, but don't want to come off as cheap..? Can you advise me on an appropriate gift or price of gift? What did you get or have you seen people get for their agent? Also...this is a buyer's agent so she has really been walking us through tons of houses and giving great advice - I know she is making money from the sale, but I appreciate her a lot!
--------------------
Gift basket is always a good way to go. You can always make one yourself and dress it up to look fancy. You could get one with lotions and perfumes, always the perfect gift for anyone and something that any woman could use.

You might easiest find a fraternal org., like an Eagle's, Moose, Elk, AMVETS, VFW or other such club to offer you their facilities for nothing or cheaply. Organize a benefit and do the activities you mentioned. Learn about 'poker runs' for motorcycle fanatics. You'd be amazed how great bikers are when it comes to helping raise money. They pay a fee to get a poker hand by going form location o location, and the winner will often donate some or all of his winnings to the cause. You may look on craigslist for a DJ who might perform for a reduced fee, or for free, like on a Saturday afternoon or a Sunday ( I am a DJ and have done probably 15 of them FREE). It's good publicity for the DJ and they can also raise tips to donate. Any of the fraternal clubs i mentioned can clue you in on pertinent state laws. I wish you the best of luck. Feel free to IM or mail me if I can help further.
