does this letter sound good?

i made a gift basket for the doctor that delivered my baby a few months ago with a bunch of coffee stuff in it because his medical assistant told me he liked coffee. i wanted to put a thank you letter in it and was wondering how the following sounds. if you have any suggestions please tell me Sorry it took so long to get this to you but I'm sure you understand how things can get delayed with a new baby. But we wanted to thank you for your expert delivery of our wonderful, healthy little girl. We hope this comes in handy if you deliver anymore 8 1/2 lb babies at 12:20 am

First of all, congratulations on your newest family member! It's a really nice gesture to send a gift basket, especially one so personal. The only suggestion I have is to not start your second sentence out with "But". There is no need for this, it is gramatically incorrect, and it adds nothing to the meaning of your sentence. I would do something like this to simplify the sentence and bring it all together. "I'm sorry it took so long to get this to you (I'm sure you understand how a new baby can delay EVERYTHING), but we wanted to thank you . . . " Once again, it's a real special way to thank your doctor. Congratulations on your little girl!
