My sister-in-law is due any day now and I would like to put together a gift basket of USEFUL items for the new parents. I'm trying to think of things I had to go out and buy (comfy new underwear, hand sanitizer,) or things I would have liked while still in the hospital (a robe,cigar for Daddy). Any one have any good ideas?

A gift certificate for 2 months from a housekeeping service, if you can afford it! Definitely gift certificates to local restaurants that have carry out or delivery. Or better yet, homemade meals that she can put in her freezer and just pop in the oven. If she is going to be breastfeeding, some lanolin and nursing pads. If she is going to be bottle feeding, nursing pads would probably still be a good idea for when her milk comes in. Really, the most helpful things to me weren't things. They were services (housekeeping, food, dog walking, etc) or offers to come over and clean or hold the baby while I bathed.
