How much should a college student spend on a wedding gift?

I'm a college student and a couple of my friends are getting married. I'm not sure how much I should be spending on their gift. I'm making them a basket full of baked goods but I'm not sure whether or not I should add something to that (e.g. something from the registry or a gift card). Any advice?

DONT SWEAT IT!! If the couple are friends of yours they will not expect a gift knowing you are on a limited income, and they wont care how much you spend if you do give one. If they balk, I would question their friendship. A baked goods basket is a nice gift for many occasions (I personally love them), however I would maybe give that to them as a house-warming, as they will probably be on their honeymoon right after the wedding. We dont want things to go stale. lol I would check the registry for something in your budget. I helped several of my friends do their registry and we made sure there was a wide range of prices - from $4.95 to $195. Or a card with a Wine and Cheese Basket would be fitting. In Texas, on a 'college budget' buy, you can get a card-$1-2, a bottle of wine-$4-7, a small block of Non-Refrigerated cheese-$2-4, and a small box of biscuit crackers-$2-4. If they do not drink, some prefer a bottle of sparkling water-$3-7. This is on the lower end, about $10-12. Remember to be true to your budget. You will be able to afford the nicer things when you have your degree. And either way, they will still love you!! Raymond
