My friends 13 year old daughter is in the hospital and I am putting together a gift basket of small stuff for her. any suggestions as to what to buy for her?

Teen magazines, be careful some are for "older" teens, bath and body has a line for younger girls. craft kits, there are tons of small ones you can get and she could do while in bed or what have you and they are pretty inexpensive.
