should I just send out these "freebies" to gift recipients or fork over the extra dough for them? I really like the free gift baskets (I've even already eaten half of one's contents writing this question), but, again, I don't have hardly any money....

If it's someone really special, than no. But, yes, by all means be conservative (and polite!) and regift them. Make sure they're classily wrapped - ribbon is a great way to spice it up a little. Especially if these are quality things, way to go!
