What is an appropriate thank you / gift for somebody who wrote you a letter of recommendation?

I recently received a letter of recommendation for graduate school from a professor at the university where I attended. I know it is at least customary to send a nice thank you note or card, but I am wondering if it would be okay to send something more, like a little gift basket or something else. I only ask because I feel like I have been close to the professor. Although we hadn't talked a whole lot over my college career we had drunk beers together at the campus pub several times. We also went on a couple study abroad 3 week classes to Mexico, and so he and all us students were fairly close. I guess I ask because I would like to get a little something more to show my appreciation, but I'm not sure if it is appropriate..?

You don't have to make it a gift for the rec. then. Just send him a gift that is meaningful to you and put a letter about how you enjoyed his class and his teaching with it. Send a little thank you card for the rec with it if you want. If you really did appreciate him then just send him a gift for being such a good teacher and mentor.
