I was in this guys class as a guest for a whole year, he really helped me out a lot, but never got paid for teaching me. I am leaving and I want to thank him, I am writing a long thank you letter and and I want to get him like a present. I was thinking like a gift basket but I don't know what kind. Any idea for a general gift??? He is a music conductor...??

That is very thoughtful of you. Depending on how much you intend to spend you could buy him a CD in his favorite music style, sheet music to a favorite song, tickets to a concert, a new book on music or conducting, a first edition book on music or about a composer he likes, a gift certificate to a favorite music store, music-oriented cuff links or tie-tack or pocket square or tie (depending on what he wears), etc. If you have absolutely no idea what he wants, you could always get him a gift certificate to Amazon. They have a lot of music-oriented things there. You could even print a page of something that you were thinking of getting, include it with the gift card, and say that you had planned to get that but weren't sure if he already had it. That way, you show that you were thinking of a particular gift but you still give him some choice in the matter. Good luck!
