Serious question for old People (and young): sweets or fruits?

I need to get a 'thank you' gift for two of my professors for writing my recommendation letters. What better than food? This is where my predicament arises: what should I get for old people? Perhaps I am stereotyping the elderly, but I view old people as kind of bitter, stern, and in dire need of their fibers. My two professors are skinny/fit, one being a sub-60 year old, the other a late 60, early 70 ex-marine. I know I am babbling, but please bear with me. I don't know about what these guys eat so I am asking you old people (and young). Should I buy a couple of fruit baskets or should I risk offending a diabetic and buy some sweets (e.g. chocolate, cookies, cake)? What will be the most pragmatic and professional, in your views?

Why don't you get the mix baskets with candy and fruit, eh?
