Looking for a charity that involved donating items to make gift baskets for homeless kids to give their moms?

When I worked for a business a couple years ago, we all participated in donating items to make gift baskets for children in homeless shelters to give to their moms for mother's day. I was not head of the charities and donations programs we part took in, so I do not remember the name. Does anyone out there know? Or do you think they just called a shelter, asked how many mothers were there with children and had us chip in? I'm out of work myself, but it's still nice to try and help other people who have it worse off. I would like to try and do something charitable... other than donating my hair and volunteering. (I would rather not do charities involving churches. I'm not religious, I am a humanist and just want to help people in need. Not to insult any religious people out there, church just isn't for me.)

Catholic Charities operates Homes for abused women and their children. Religion plays no part in this community service. Our group makes quilts and personalized pillowcases and totes for this organization. Most of the women and children arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Call Social Services and ask which organization runs the nearest shelters.
