I would like to get her books (preferably not about cancer.) Do you have any suggestions for lighthearted books, books about sisters, or just good books in general? She's in her 60s, but very young at heart. Also other suggestions about what else to put in the basket are greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for your help.

That's so sweet of you to want to put together something comforting for her. And that's really where you should go with it. She's going to be very uncomfortable through the chemo. Typical reactions to chemo are nausea, vomiting, chills, dry mouth, dry skin and lips and increased skin sensitivity. She'll need foods that are gentle on her stomach, since chemo can cause nausea and vomiting. She'll also need things to help her feel comfortable: soft and cozy blankets, high thread count sheets, soft flannel jammies, foot and hand warmers, lip balm, etc. Don't forget about things to make her feel beautiful as well: body lotions, pretty cardigans, fun glasses to help with reading. As for books, I'd suggest Joyce Meyer for supportive and uplifting spiritual writing. If your sister likes light and fluffy mysteries, try Janet Evanovich. (My 60 year old mom, 94 year old neighbor and 42 year old me all love her!) For a bit more inspiration, try Maya Angelou. Make sure you don't send flowers or live plants. Although the color would be cheering, her immune system will be compromised and the plants could cause inflammation or respitory issues. Your sister is very lucky to have someone as considerate as you by her side as she goes through chemo. Give her gentle hugs and be there when she needs you.
