I have a candle & gift shop in a listed grade 2 building. The ceiling is quite low & has beautiful oak beams in it. I have decorated around the edges with dried hops, a few bunches of lavender, some old fashioned lanterns, wicker baskets hanging up etc, but the middle of the ceiling still looks a bit bare (even though the beams are lovely!). Has anyone got any ideas for decorating the middle beams? With the ceiling being quite low it can't be anything that hangs down too much & I want to keep with the traditional theme of the building & not stray too far off track from it being a candle & gift shop.

Personally, I'd leave them bare! I find that if I walk into a shop that has things all over the ceiling, and in the corners, and all over the walls and shelves, I don't know where to start looking. It can feel a little claustrophobic and I usually don't buy anything. You want to make sure people can see your gifts, and are not too distracted by other things in the room. If you want to avoid the effect of everything being around the circumference of your shop, is there any way you could move some of your candles and gifts into the centre of the room? If you really want to decorate them though, I'd go for something which can be fixed directly onto the beams, like horseshoes, plates, stars, or even mini spice-rack style shelves with small ornaments on them. Another idea is to buy some pretty ceramic or metal letters which you can use to spell out the name of your shop or any other phrases such as 'mind your head' or 'welcome', etc. I actually like that last idea the most! I hope this helps :-) xx Emmie
