1. You take the square root of 2162, which is 46 and some decimals. Then you can tell approximately where the book is open to: 46*47 2. Use x and y for the different kinds of tickets. x=adults ($5) and y=students ($2) 5x + 2y= 410 x+y=100 5x + 2y=410 -2x-2y=-200 -------------- 3x=210 x=70 : adults y=(100-y)=30 : students 3. Monique's age=x, Monique's mother's age= x+23 x*(x+23)=518 x^2+23x-518=0 factor and you get (x+37)(x-14)=0 so Monique is 14 and her mother is 14+23=37. 4. This one is done the same way as #2. The total of x +y is 50 baskets and the total of 3x (3 pears) +4y (4 apples) is 185 pieces of fruit. Now just do it exactly like number 2. You come out with 15 pears and 35 apples. 5. At least one of the bills has to be a $1 bill, otherwise you wouldn't get change that includes something other than 5s and 10s (a "9" can't be divided by 10 or 5). a. I think it's $31 per ticket (a $1 bill, a $10, and a $20) b. 19 students 6. Breen=Lang-39 x=Lang x-39=Breen y=Kovic x+(x-39)+y=500 y=x-25 x=188 (Lang) Breen=149 Kovic=163
