Some thoughts would be obvious, like little stuffed characters, stickers, or other movie-related items for the Nightmare Before Christmas basket. Another thing would be to RUN to Target or other stores while they're clearing out the Halloween stuff - it's cheap right now and will be gone soon. Target has a great line of scary themed stuff under the brand name Edgar & Ellen. Black nail polish or lipstick would be pretty cool, or even some fishnet stockings! If your friend likes the Nightmare Before Christmas DVD, consider getting other DVDs by Tim Burton to put in it. He did Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, Beetle Juice, and that blast from the past, Frankenweenie. He also did Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Pee Wee's Big Adventure, but those aren't quite as scary. Also, believe it or not Nightmare Before Christmas is a Disney movie, so you'll be able to find ornaments and other movie items at Disney stores or at their online websites. For the Red Sox basket, I'd just go to a sports memorabilia or sports collectible store. They have autographed baseballs and baseball cards, licensed Red Sox merchandise, and Red Sox apparel. They should soon have ads on TV for the Boston 2007 season in review, since they just won the World Series, so you may want to consider getting something like that. A Red Sox baseball cap, Red Sox baseball, and an autographed baseball card of Josh Beckett would do the trick. A cozy winter basket could include a fleece blanket, slipper socks or other fuzzy footwear, hot cocoa, a CD like Sarah McLachlan's Wintersong, and a classic or girl-friendly DVD like Breakfast at Tiffany's, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridget Jones Diary, or Sense and Sensibility. There are many basket ideas. Baskets with spa products go over well with many women. If you give a guy a basket that has something to eat, something to drink, and something to watch on TV, he'll probably like it! If you list gender and ages, as well as some interests, you'll get lots of ideas!
