Why are you told not to lift any more than 5 lbs for four to six weeks after surgery?

I see lots of instructions telling you not to but do not say why or what the complications would be.. I had surgery in the summer and after 2 weeks I went to a low key Bridal Shower, and one lady asked me to pick up something and ugh I felt like a Primadonna saying No so I managed to drag it with the least amount of effort, but in the end it didn't weigh that much I think.. It was a large gift basket filled with light stuff.. Stuffed animal, hair mousse, bump-its for the hair.. Might've weighed more than some ladies purses and not been any more than 5lbs.. So I'm wondering why is it advised not to lift heavy items weighing more than 5lbs after surgery, for at least 4-6 weeks?
